Press release from Flex-A-Bed, with regards to its compliance to the new mattress safety guidelines.
Flex-A-Bed’s craftsmen have built every Flex-A-Bed adjustable bed using the same guiding principles of care and consideration since 1969 in LaFayette. However, they differ from every big name bed manufacturer as they are the only company that produces both their own mattresses and base units in the same factory. They oversee every aspect, every stitch and every piece that leaves their production line.
As the new federal Mattress Open Flame Standard was set to go into effect for the industry July 1, Flex-A-Bed remained true to its roots, working with top U.S. suppliers and consultants to meet this new standard. As a result, the company’s entire product line has passed the rigorous testing process set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) with superior results.
The CPSC enacted this new regulation after more than eight years of research and study. The standard was put into effect to limit the intensity of a mattress fire, in an effort to reduce future injuries and deaths. The CPSC estimates that the new government safety standard could eliminate up to 75 percent of the 330 deaths and 1,680 injuries that occur annually from mattress fires.
Compliance is mandatory, but every company will not make the grade. Industry experts believe that hundreds of small mattress manufacturers around the country could go out of business because they could not afford to meet this new safety standard.
“The safety of our customer is our top priority and we were willing to do anything within our means to continue producing one of the top adjustable beds available,” says Max Morrison, Flex-A-Bed president. “We are the little guy, but we felt this investment could and would show that tried and true American craftsmanship can prevail.”
“In a world of mass production and outsourcing for the cheapest price, we felt that we owed it to our loyal customers to continue manufacturing and assembling our beds the same way we always have — by hand, using skilled professionals,” says Morrison. “We may never be the biggest name in the industry, but we as a company feel a great sense of pride every time we ship a mattress that was built from the foundation up, by hand.”
