A Denver-based mattress manufacturer is now closing its doors, after doing business for almost four decades.

United Sleep Products of Denver has shut the doors of its 89,000-square-foot building at 412 Oak St., where it began in 1970 as Kinder Furniture & Bedding. As many as 160 employees have worked at the factory in recent years.

The company also reportedly has closed its factory in Fort Wayne, Ind.

United Sleep produced bedding products such as futons and coil, no-flip and memory-foam mattresses. The Denver plant produced about 2,000 pieces of bedding daily.

This fold-out ottoman is truly a space-saving piece of furniture.

The Mattress Outlet Inc., of Spokane, has opened its fourth store here in a building on north Division Street formerly occupied by Sylvan Furniture Co.

The store opened last weekend in the 22,000-square-foot leased structure, at 1233 N. Division, says owner Ken Mullinax. Sylvan Furniture, which had occupied the building since 2001, lost its lease there earlier this year and couldn’t be reached for comment about its plans.

Clark Pacific Real Estate Co., of Spokane, handled Mattress Outlet’s lease of the building.

Another mattress manufacturing company pushes to go green as it brings its latest eco-friendly line to the market:

Latex derived from natural sources LAS VEGAS — Top 15 bedding producer Englander is spotlighting a “green” bedding story here, highlighted by its new Eco-Friendly Latex model.

That bed features latex derived from natural sources and not fashioned from petroleum-based products, according to Englander officials. It is covered in a Culp ticking made from organic cotton. Retails for the pillowtop bed are estimated to be in the $1,699 to $1,999 range.

The Sleep Squad revolutionizes how mattress selling is done. Customers don’t come to the store, the store comes to you. The Sleep Squad showroom is found in a van that moves around the Chicago area. It’s an idea welcomed by mostly the design conscious, according to Furniture Style, who interviewed Sleep Squad’s owner, Michael Cote.

FS: You mentioned that consumers don’t like testing a mattress in a public setting. How does Sleep Squad’s experience differ?

New York Times published a very thorough article on the complexities of sleep, which deals with one’s prefence, habits, lifestyle, disorders, the mattress industry and a whole other factors. The article is extensive and loaded with facts and stipulations and here are some excerpts:

It just kind of lies there.” For generations many consumers perceived the innerspring beds of the three dominant “S-brands” — Sealy, Serta and Simmons — to be interchangeable. A Gallup poll 10 years ago found that nearly half of Americans didn’t know what brand of mattress they slept on. The industry blamed itself, often ruthlessly.

Some people usually take buying a mattress for granted especially since, in today’s standards, mattresses have become expensive pieces of furniture. Some stretch the usability of their old and ruined mattress, foregoing health over economics, when if you think about it, delaying your mattress purchase can become costlier in due time.
