As most everyone is aware, Vera Wang is most renowned for her gown designs, particularly her wedding gown creations. But not every person probably knows she also designs a line of luxury mattress and these was launched early this year (in partnership with Serta).

The Wall Street Journal has recently done an interview with her and below are the excerpts:

WSJ: Isn’t the business of selling mattresses and other home goods fundamentally different from the business of selling designer gowns and apparel?

Alliance Sleep Products unveiled during the Home Furnishing Show in Vegas last month their new line of luxury mattress called the Waterford Mattress Collection. The company has tied up with Waterford Wedgwood to create a luxury mattress that will be known for its craftmanship and beautiful details.

Waterford Mattress Collection is hand-crafted and will make use of natural products like rayon Belgium damask and New Zealand Joma wool. It will come in Talalay latex boxspring, which is built to provide support, proper ventilation and resistance against bacteria.

Maybe it’s a reflection of the current state of the economy today, even Tempur-Pedic mattress sales are sagging….

According to a report from Forbes, the financial magazine which was able to get in touch with the luxury mattress company, this has been rather expected:

Although the first quarter isn’t quite over, sales thus far have been less than stellar due to a downturn in consumer spending. The company now expects high single-digit percentage decrease in sales for the quarter as compared to the year prior. Tempur-Pedic also expects its earnings per share price for the quarter to be about half that of the same quarter of 2007, which came in at 35 cents per share. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had expected 44 cents per share. The company will announce its first-quarter results in April.

That’s right.  Gown-designer to celebrities, Vera Wang is now designing mattresses. Correction, LUXURY mattresses. This will be made by Serta and will be exclusively sold at Neiman Marcus, carrying a price range of $1,999 to $2,999.

Vera Wang is famous all over the world as a bridal gown designer. And perhaps because this served as an inspiration for her, she has also designed a bridal mattress whose fabric is made of imported Mega Eurotop materials, with interwoven holographic threads. They actually “sparkle”.

• If you are going for sprung mattresses, then choose the no-turn types. Since sprung mattresses are required to be regularly turned (like at least one time each month) to maintain its quality and condition, sometimes the task may become too exhausting. To avoid all that, no-turn types are your best bet.
