The Mattress Firm Inc., a top national retailer of mattress products, leased 21,646 square feet of industrial space at the Shades Creek Business Park on 2901 Shannon Oxmoor Road. The space was leased for $5.25 per square foot, net, with a five-year term.

Delivered in 2000, the Shades Creek Business Park is a 210,000-square-foot industrial warehouse building consisting of 50 parking spaces, 10 loading docks, two drive-in bays and an ESFR sprinkler. As of July 1st, the company occupied the 21,646-square-foot space to support four new retail locations in the Birmingham area.

More company expansions on-going for Mattress Firm, originally a Houston based company, as it tries to penetrate the Southern California market….

Mattress Firm of Houston said today that it intends to buy Mattress Gallery, a Los Angeles-based chain with nine locations in Orange County. Upon completion of the deal, Mattress Gallery locations will turn into Mattress Firm stores and adopt its expanded product selection. The transaction is expected to be complete within 60 days.

Mattress Gallery locations are similar to Mattress Firm stores, averaging 3,000 to 4,000 square feet. Mattress Firm is known for its high-end Sealy products.

In 2006, Furniture Today reports that JangSoo Industry Co., a Korean bed manufacturer, is entering the market to sell stone beds to US consumers.

While it looks rock-hard, the stone bed is actually one sophisticated furniture with tons of benefits. The mattress is made of quartz, topaz and jade and may be easily heated via the coils under the stone mattress. A heated mattress, as you should be aware, provides therapeutic benefits.

The stone bed is particularly appealing to those who like their mattress firm.

It’s a good thing this complaint turned out well and that the company extended what was its responsibility to the consumer:

Ed and his wife Geri knew the mattress had a 10-year warranty, so when Mattress Firm sent out a rep to conduct a complete exam, the couple thought they’d be getting a new one.”A few days later Mattress Firm sent us a letter saying the mattress wasn’t bad enough for them to do anything about it.”

The couple accepted the decision. They then spent another year with the indents and humps in their mattress. Ed decided to call Mattress Firm again.

Houston-based mattress company, Mattress Firm, is now closing on the acquisition of Mattress Pro, a mattress retailer that has about 36 stores in the Texas/Nevada area.

CEO Gary Fazio believes this latest development further stabilizes Mattress Firm’s position and growth in the market.

Mattress Firm would have to take over 53 stores in California, had its plans with Mattress Gallery take off. But as Furniture Today reports, the company has decided not to pursue the business saying the timing was off.

“Mattress Firm has withdrawn its letter of intent to acquire Mattress Gallery. We have worked closely with them for the past several weeks through the due diligence phase and we appreciate the time and effort they put into the process. However, we ultimately decided the timing was not quite right. We remain focused on organic growth in our current markets, as well as expansion into new geographies, and we will continue to look for future acquisition opportunities” — Gary Fazio, CEO
