While the federal government pushes through with its new mandate for mattress safety standards effective July 1, there are those that say the safety precautions set may actually be more dangerous. Furniture Today is predicting a decline in sales of mattresses for 2008 but foresees something good in terms of bedding shipments.

The forecast, compiled with input from virtually every major U.S. bedding producer, envisions a difficult year for the industry, with producers and retailers alike struggling to eek out gains. It calls for a decline in units of 0.6%, with dollars growing by only 2.8%. That dollar growth would be the weakest since the recession year of 2001, when the dollar value of bedding shipments declined by 0.3%, according to ISPA.

This is probably great news for those connected to the mattress industry. Research from SBI Reports, a marketing arm that taps and checks trending in many industries and consumer goods establishments, indicate that the market value of mattresses should increase into a 10-billion dollar industry by 2011 in the US alone.

From 2002 to 2006, the value of mattress shipments increased 11% annually as a result of fairly substantial increases after 2003. Imports grew at an 18% CAGR, slightly faster than exports (14%). For the projected period, 2007 through 2011, SBI forecasts strong growth of exports, from $246 million in 2007 to $438 million in 2011 (a 16% CAGR), as U.S. companies target new markets, particularly in Asia. Imports are expected to grow at a slightly lower CAGR, 12% over the next five years, while shipments, the largest segment of the mattress market, will post a 10% CAGR.

On May 14-16, leaders of the mattress industry will converge in Naples, Fla. to attend the bedding conference sponsored by Home Furnishings Independents Association. Danny Seo, a famous green living advocate and the person behind Natural Care mattress (produced by Simmons), will be the headline speakerof the event to be held at the Ritz Carlton resort. He is expected to discuss about what going green should mean for the industry today.

The International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) will host ISPA EXPO 2008, the world’s largest tradeshow devoted exclusively to the mattress industry, March 12-15, 2008 in Baltimore, MD, at the Baltimore Convention Center. STLBeds bring up an interesting view on the different types of mattresses found in stores these days. In truth, this isn’t a unique problem. Anyone could get confused with the number of choices, that making comparison between mattress is nearly impossible.

Unfortunately for patrons these manufacturers will display different model names, differ in construction make up, fabric patterns, quilt stitching and even total weight. These comparable mattresses are supposed to share similar construction only offered with a simple change of the fabric color and a change of the name on the label. The reality is that it could be a lower-grade product. Protection of these large retail cash cow dealers is imperative especially in the cases where mattress dealers are in close proximity to one another.

According to Furniture Today, bedding companies are doing very well with complying to the new mattress flammability standard.

WESTON, Fla. — An official with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the mattress industry is working hard to comply with a tough new federal mattress flammability standard.

“Overall, you are doing a good job,” said Mary Toro, associate director of CPSC’s Office of Compliance.

He advised keeping FR records in an easily accessible format. “Your day (with CPSC inspectors) will be shorter and your anxiety level will be lower.”
