Research work conducted by Sustainable Technologies Initiative (STI), a company based in the UK, shows some very effective alternative ways by which mattress manufacturers can provide for more environment-friendly sleeping solutions.

Mattresses are conventionally made using various synthetic materials that often carry adverse effects to the environment, especially when these are not properly disposed. By pushing the use of natural fibers from recycled wool, cotton and other organic materials, in place of foam padding or synthetic fibers which used to be the common practice, Sustainable Technologies Initiative believes that the move does not only help the environment, it also improves the competitiveness of the industry through lowered manufacturing costs. Further to that, consumers are provided better sleeping alternatives as studies have also indicated that natural products bring bigger and better benefits.

While the federal government pushes through with its new mandate for mattress safety standards effective July 1, there are those that say the safety precautions set may actually be more dangerous. The chemicals to achieve a flame-proof mattress are said to cause more harm than good, ten years down the line. Below are the points People for Cleaner Beds Org have made regarding this:

The chemicals used to flameproof mattresses have never been studied for human exposure risk in this application. (Except now the CPSC has released a limited study.)

We know almost all the chemicals to flameproof mattresses are acutely toxic and many also cause cancer.

Mattress manufacturers are made to comply with the recent guidelines for fire safety standards for mattresses, which took effect last July. But there are now reports coming out that fire-retardant mattresses may in fact be more harmful.

This recent expose from a local CBS station (Jim Osman of CBS I-Team) provides interview of mattress workers who are now suffering from different breathing problems and sinus problems, caused by the chemicals they use to manufacture fire-retardant mattresses at Simmons. The company on the other hand hired independent testers and  found no toxic materials in the mattresses.

Ah, the bed bug problem. It’s a perpetual dilemma. Hence mattress manufacturers continuously come up with all kinds of products to fight these off. But are these new products really able to rid of bed bugs? The visco-memory foam mattresses, for instance, with its more advanced composition than a regular mattress, promises to at least be bed bug free. But is it really?

• Keep in mind that foam mattresses retain heat. Choose one that is engineered with proper ventilation, or buy bed covers that will help keep it cooler.
• If you are eyeing a luxury mattress, go pocket sprung types. They work to adjust to your weight.
• If you are going for sprung mattresses, then choose the no-turn types. Since sprung mattresses are required to be regularly turned (like at least one time each month) to maintain its quality and condition, sometimes the task may become too exhausting. To avoid all that, no-turn types are your best bet.

Be wary when buying a mattress from a retailer that offers you a satisfaction or “comfort” guarantee.

Major mattress manufacturers do not allow retailers to return to them mattresses that customers simply did not find comfortable. Regardless of what you may think, the major name brand bedding manufacturers do not rebuild new mattresses from old ones.

Mattress manufacturers understand the importance of the new standards set by CPSC. It’s all about keeping homes safe. Majority of them agree with complying to the new guidelines. Although there are still some, retailers especially, who need to be provided with more information, so that they can really see how this new standard will benefit everyone.

29 states and the District of Columbia have laws requiring mattress manufacturers to identify mattresses constructed with new materials.

Only 17 states require that used mattresses designed for resale be identified as such. Although the cover may look new, a used sleep set won’t offer you the same support and comfort as a new one.

21 states do not require the identification of materials used in mattress construction. To ensure that you’re buying a product made with new materials, consult your retailer.
