A drug prescribed to control bed wetting has been considered dangerous by the Food and Drug Administration following the death of two people who have been taking the medicine as advised by doctor.

Desmopressin is sold under the names DDAVP Nasal Spray, DDAVP Rhinal Tube, DDVP, Minirin and Stimate Nasal Spray. Makers include Sanofi-Aventis and several generic companies.

Other forms of the drug “should be used cautiously” in patients at risk of sodium imbalances that can be caused by over-hydration, the FDA said.

The agency reviewed 61 reports of patients treated with desmopressin who developed seizures related to hyponatremia, when sodium is too low. Two of the patients died.

To help stop snoring, this computerized pillow, developed by Daryoush Bazargani, a German professor, promises to “reduce or enlarge air compartments within the pillow to facilitate nasal airflow to minimise snoring as the user shifts during sleep”

Snores are analyzed through a computer attached to any regular pillow and the image to the left is its prototype.

A doctor at NASA’s Sleep Disorder Clinic said that the key to sleeping better is to “find a mattress that is comfortable [to you]”. He said this in regards to the latest technology manufacturers have incorporated in mattresses.

The clinic and research wing, the Centre for Sleep and Chronobiology, bypass specialty brand beds, such as Select Comfort (air chambers, with each side adjustable), Tempur-Pedic (body-moulding “memory foam”) and Duxiana (tiny springs in layers), in favour of regular coil-spring mattresses. Some of the clinic’s patients slumber so deeply they want to buy the bed. But, Moldofsky says, they soon realize they slept well because they weren’t at home, there were no children crying and no dog jumping on the bed.
