Tonight is Thanksgiving and with little time left to prepare and make your home much more inviting, here are some last minute tips to sprucing up your home when friends and families are sure to drop by and celebrate with you.

I’m pretty sure there is a mad rush at the mall today so it could be too late for buying new mattresses or bedroom furniture. But you still have a few more preparations to do to making your guest feel so much more at home:

Selling mattresses seems like a routinary job and I never thought someone can make an interesting story out of this. Errine Dobson, a writer from Manhattan, comes up with this short piece on a day in the life of a mattress salesman.

My first battle of the mattresses began in the early years of my marriage, at my in-laws’ house. I grew to dread the Friday nights when, after working all week, hubby Bob and I would fight the traffic and make the four-hour trek to his parents’ home, arriving just in time to hit the hay in the saggy double he got for his 10th birthday.

Next to holidays, back to school preparations rake over billions of dollars every year. Buying and upgrading the things your children need for school is necessary for every parent. Although sometimes, some consumers do get carried away with their purchases. And advertisers duly take advantage of this. Consumerism may have in fact reached new levels because as September nears, shops like bookstores and school supply stores are not the only ones coming up with back-to-school promotions, even mattress stores are also taking a piece of the pie.

Children’s Health Envrionmental Coalition provides these tips to making your bedroom or your child’s bedroom a safer and more comfortable environment.

Allow a new mattress to offgas before you sleep on it.
Unwrap the mattress from plastic and lean it against a wall in a well-ventilated room for a few days before sleeping on it.

Say no to water and stain repellents
Some water and stain repellents, such as DuPont’s Teflon, are under investigation for possible health and environmental effects. The chemical used is found in humans and persists in the environment for a long time.

Mattress manufacturers are made to comply with the recent guidelines for fire safety standards for mattresses, which took effect last July. But there are now reports coming out that fire-retardant mattresses may in fact be more harmful.

This recent expose from a local CBS station (Jim Osman of CBS I-Team) provides interview of mattress workers who are now suffering from different breathing problems and sinus problems, caused by the chemicals they use to manufacture fire-retardant mattresses at Simmons. The company on the other hand hired independent testers and  found no toxic materials in the mattresses.

Have you ever wondered what mattresses may signify in your dreams? I wonder since a friend of mine recently had a dream of buying one and asked for the meaning of it. Like I would know. But I did check for dream interpretations online, and this is what I found:

The meaning of this dream is connected with the condition and/or comfort of the mattress. If the mattress was comfortable and clean, then it is an omen of good luck. If not, it is a warning to start saving for the rainy days ahead.

Firm mattresses are best for those who love to sleep on their backs. Pillow top or plush mattresses are great for side sleepers. So which one are you?

Consider your headboard and bed frame measurements in buying a new mattress. Mattresses today are thick and not making adjustments for the headboard, so your mattress could fit the entire bed, may be your problem later.

Mattresses carry a ten year warranty. If your buying for a room that won’t be used as much (like a guest room), go for the less expensive kind, to save on spendings.
