As most everyone is aware, Vera Wang is most renowned for her gown designs, particularly her wedding gown creations. But not every person probably knows she also designs a line of luxury mattress and these was launched early this year (in partnership with Serta).

The Wall Street Journal has recently done an interview with her and below are the excerpts:

WSJ: Isn’t the business of selling mattresses and other home goods fundamentally different from the business of selling designer gowns and apparel?

The great thing about buying mattresses from the warehouse is variety and lower prices. Warehouse owners buy these in bulk, so they are able to give it for a much lower price. Some warehouses even take in old mattress for proper disposal or recycling.

As with any mattress store, you can check around the whole warehouse to see what products they have to offer. Comparing prices is what a good consumer often does, but don’t also overlook comfort, quality and firmness. Ask from the store employee if you can test the mattress and double check if these are not recycled ones, which tend to be priced much, much lower. Also, ask the employee important questions about the mattress and if there are currently any discounts or package deals you should not miss, as warehouses often do have this.

Some people usually take buying a mattress for granted especially since, in today’s standards, mattresses have become expensive pieces of furniture. Some stretch the usability of their old and ruined mattress, foregoing health over economics, when if you think about it, delaying your mattress purchase can become costlier in due time.

As soon as you experience discomfort and pain in your back that won’t go away despite frequent medication or visits to your doctor, then that is a sign that you should already replace your mattress pronto. It’s your health that is at stake here. And growing attached to your old mattress will not help you recover.

Here’s a nice little DIY on how to fold mattress covers if you’ve always been wondering why you weren’t good at it like me.

As a guy, folding my mattress cover after laundry day was quite a chore. With the corners and flaps sticking out, I used to just roll the mattress cover up under my arm in a ball and that was that. Today, I will share with you other clueless mattress folders how it can be done easily and quickly.
Step 1: Lay your mattress cover flat and pinch the corners until you have a rectangular shape. The mattress cover should resemble some odd looking elongated donut.

Here’s a couple that had a sexual intercourse on an old mattress in New York very recently. If you don’t want strangers making love on the old mattress you just threw out on the street, take it directly to the trash center.

OK, so it’s 2:30 a.m. on a Monday night, and right outside my window, on the public street below, in front of God and everybody are a man and a woman going to town on a dirty, stained mattress the neighbor girl threw out earlier that morning!!! Imagine!

DR3, one of the very few mattress recycling unit in the United States, is a name derived from organizations slogan — “Divert Reduce Reuse Recycle.”.

The mattress recycling unit has facilities that would help keep landfills filled with old mattresses, as well as provide jobs for people, under the support of St. Vincent de Paul.

DR3 recycles some 10,000 mattresses monthly according to this report.

Its mattresses come from landfills throughout the Bay Area, local waste haulers and furniture retailers. They leave as components - bales of foam or cotton, and piles of scrap wood or metal springs.

Violet Township Fire Department, based in Ohio, took three kinds of mattresses out for testing — one made in 2002, another made after the revised July 2007 mattress standard implementation; and still another with a product called Fire Defender mixed into the material. The result?

The fire did not appear to penetrate the new mattress at about 7 minutes into the fire. The one with the protective cover also contained the flames. At about nine minutes, flames leaping from the old mattress were almost out of control
