Mattress manufacturers are made to comply with the recent guidelines for fire safety standards for mattresses, which took effect last July. But there are now reports coming out that fire-retardant mattresses may in fact be more harmful.

At least 1300 bed sets sold by the Hooker Furniture Company of Martinsville, Virginia are being recalled. According to reports, the bed is a potential risk to children and may cause strangulation. There are gaps on the upper bunks that exceed the safety standards.

Hazard: The bunk beds have gaps between parts of the upper bunk exceeding the space allowed by the federal bunk bed safety standard, posing a potential entrapment or strangulation hazard.
