Sealy is promising a “major innovation.” Simmons offers new comfort options in its Beautyrest Black line. A new promotional and midpriced line is being launched by Serta’s owners. Spring Air is loaded, with four revamped bedding lines. And Leggett & Platt will show its high-end “smart bed,” which generated plenty of buzz at the recent Consumer Electronics Show.

Spring Air Co., maker of Spring Air mattresses, has merged with Consolidated Bedding Inc and is now expanding its mattress operations in the United States.

Effective July 2, the chief executive officer of Spring Air will be Robert W. Hellyer, 48 of Roswell, Ga. Hellyer was most recently president of Simmons Mattress Co. Previously, he was the head of national sales for Stearns and Foster, a division of Sealy Inc. Jim Nation, the current president of The Spring Air Company, will hold the same title in the new Spring Air. Steve Antinori, currently chairman and chief executive officer of Consolidated will become chairman of the Spring Air board, the company said in a statement.

It just kind of lies there.” For generations many consumers perceived the innerspring beds of the three dominant “S-brands” — Sealy, Serta and Simmons — to be interchangeable. A Gallup poll 10 years ago found that nearly half of Americans didn’t know what brand of mattress they slept on. The industry blamed itself, often ruthlessly.

On choosing the best brand:

Innerspring mattresses, particularly the Big S’s (Simmons, Serta, Sealy), dominate the market. But how to choose among Serta and Sealy, Stearns and Foster, and King Koil? Or for that matter, between the Simmons Beautyrest Exceptionale Lenore and the Simmons Beautyrest Do-Not-Disturb Royalty Ultra? Ignore brand names. They’re meaningless. Just pay attention to comfort.

Mattress manufacturers are made to comply with the recent guidelines for fire safety standards for mattresses, which took effect last July. But there are now reports coming out that fire-retardant mattresses may in fact be more harmful.

This recent expose from a local CBS station (Jim Osman of CBS I-Team) provides interview of mattress workers who are now suffering from different breathing problems and sinus problems, caused by the chemicals they use to manufacture fire-retardant mattresses at Simmons. The company on the other hand hired independent testers and  found no toxic materials in the mattresses.

On May 14-16, leaders of the mattress industry will converge in Naples, Fla. to attend the bedding conference sponsored by Home Furnishings Independents Association. Danny Seo, a famous green living advocate and the person behind Natural Care mattress (produced by Simmons), will be the headline speakerof the event to be held at the Ritz Carlton resort. He is expected to discuss about what going green should mean for the industry today.
